The existing masonry piers and fencing were literally falling apart due to water infiltration and rusting.  It was necessary to completely demolish the piers, but the fencing was salvaged.  The piers were re-built using materials that exactly matched the original materials, but were detailed in a manner that would ensure longevity.  The fencing was sandblasted and factory primed and painted with a high-performance paint, then re-attached to the piers in a manner that permitted differential expansion and contraction.
